Assistant Scrutiny Officer
We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised individual with excellent communication skills to provide support to Barnsley Council’s overview and scrutiny function. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to work with Elected Members from all political parties and support them to act as a watchdog that reviews and monitors the work and performance of the Council as well as other local organisations, such as healthcare providers.
In this varied post, you will support Elected Members on the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee to undertake investigations and provide constructive challenge to services from across the Council as well as partner agencies. This includes assisting Elected Members to understand and review how services are delivered, as well as make recommendations regarding how they could be improved.
The role requires you to undertake research and help prepare well-structured reports which simplify complex information clearly and concisely. This includes gathering, analysing and presenting data in a variety of formats. You will be organised and undertake administrative duties associated with the post such as attending, supporting and arranging meetings.
You will be personable and approachable with the ability to work in a political environment. This includes being able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats with Elected Members, senior officers within the Council and a variety of external stakeholders. You will be self-motivated and able to undertake work using your own initiative, as well as develop solutions to problems.
Experience of working in an administration role in a local authority or similar organisation would be an advantage as would an understanding of the current issues facing Barnsley.
For an informal discussion please contact Jane Murphy, Scrutiny Officer on 07741702447 (Monday-Wednesday).
Please note, interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams during the week commencing 26th April 2021.
