Surrey County Council has been awarded a grant from MHCLG/Historic England as part of the Local Heritage List Campaign, to host a project to create or review the Local Lists of Heritage Assets of six district and borough partner authorities in the county. The award covers the appointment of an Historic Buildings’ Officer for the period of one year to research, undertake and complete the assessment, including the publication of the results on the county’s Historic Environment Record.

Although primarily based with Surrey’s Historic Environment Planning Team in Woking, the role will likely involve a considerable degree of remote working, some community engagement and liaison with the partner bodies in the project.

The project will offer an exciting opportunity for a suitably-qualified and well-organised historic environment specialist to practise and grow their skills in the assessment, understanding and management of heritage assets within the context of the planning process. Although a specialism in the built environment is paramount, it is anticipated that the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a track record in the investigation, assessment, understanding, conservation and management of a wider range of heritage assets, including archaeological remains and designed and natural historic landscapes.

Surrey County Council is a County Planning Authority responsible for dealing with planning applications for minerals and waste development and for the County Council’s own development proposals, which include Education and Highways Management. The Historic Environment Planning Team is part of the Environment, Transport and Infrastructure directorate and provides advice, guidance and heritage-related planning advice to a number of organisations, as well as to the general public.

To be shortlisted for interview your application and personal statement must clearly evidence the following as a minimum requirement:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject, with a demonstrable passion for the historic environment
  • Membership or equivalent of the relevant professional body (e.g. IHBC, CIfA)
  • Track record of the creation and publication of historic area assessments and management plans
  • excellent IT skills and be confident at using Microsoft Office and GIS applications
  • Full UK driving licence
