Be a part of Barnsley’s Regeneration
Barnsley is a fantastic place in which to live, work, invest and visit. We're an award-winning council working together with partners to improve economic, social and physical wellbeing across the borough. With exciting developments, such as the recently announced South Yorkshire devolution deal, we’re poised to deliver inclusive economic growth to benefit all our residents. And with the recently-opened Market Kitchen and the Glassworks development set for completion in 2021 we’re firmly on the cultural map.
This role will be key to the success of our new Corporate Plan 2021 – 24 and our big ambitions for Barnsley in 2030. Our Housing strategy aims to build 24,000 new homes by 2032 and we are well on our way to meeting that target, working to ensure everyone in the Borough has a safe, warm home. We are also working to be a Zero carbon Council by 2040 and to be a zero carbon borough by 2045. Together we are working with our partners across the Council and the Borough to be a leader in sustainable practices, support cleantech businesses and nature-based solutions, addressing climate change in all our decision making. So the successful postholder will be joining the Council at a crucial time. Barnsley is a robust agile Council generating positive change for the borough and its residents and you will be very much at the heart of that.
You’ll be responsible for a diverse portfolio of exciting housing and energy projects and programmes at scale, attracting external funding and investment from both the private and public sector and maximising business opportunities. We’re looking for someone with a real commitment to building to create a sense of place who has or can quickly build an understanding the Barnsley context working with a variety of partners in a significant leadership role. You will need creativity, good interpersonal skills and a sharp delivery focus to lead your team in support of our vision and the Housing Strategy and Strategic Energy Action plan. You will also have experience of working to build influence in a political environment and through effective partnerships. A key responsibility will be managing the relationship with Berneslai Homes, the Arm’s Length Management Organisation (ALMO) responsible for managing around 18,500 homes on behalf of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.
At Barnsley Council we very much adopt a One Council approach, and you will be supported by a range of other internal teams within the Regeneration and Culture service as well as a wide range of business partners across the Council. You’ll also find a positive working culture, where innovation and forward-thinking is warmly welcomed. Are you ready to lead a team contributing to a better Barnsley?
