The role

Oxford, the City of dreaming spires with its beautiful architecture, history and culture is looking for someone to join their Regeneration and Economy team and it could be you. We are seeking an economic or community development professional to deliver innovative economic development initiatives against a backdrop of expanding inequality, and need to stimulate recovery from the COVID-19 global pandemic. Oxford is a leading centre for innovation and education in the UK, but at the same time suffers from some of the highest levels of inequality in the country. Consequently, fostering an Inclusive Economy for the residents and businesses of Oxford is one of Oxford City Council’s key priorities. The Principal Economic Development Officer will play a key role in a unique Community Wealth Building partnership, working with anchor institutions, the community business sector, and residents to establish opportunities for new community owned businesses to form and grow.

Working effectively across a range of council services will be essential to success of the council’s new approaches to addressing inequality. The post-holder will seek out and drive opportunities to support community business to form and grow, also identifying appropriate procurement opportunities for community businesses to bid for. The post-holder will also build relationships with property services in a range of institutions, including the council, to identify and leverage underused spaces or other community assets to be repurposed for community businesses to use. In doing so, the post-holder will also have the opportunity to support delivery of the city’s economic strategy, economic recovery plan, and regeneration programme.

A key focus for this role is to be a champion for Oxford’s Inclusive Economy agenda and opportunities which requires an active problem solver and innovator with a strategic outlook. With a flexible approach, ability to negotiate, and drive results across multiple work-streams, the successful candidate will be highly motivated to make a difference.
