About The Job

Salary: £29,577 - £32,234 per annum
Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week
Location: Chichester, County Hall

Your role as a Health and Safety Advisor is a specialist function and unique to the Fire and Rescue Service.

You will apply your specialist knowledge to ensure the provision of competent advice and guidance in a specialised range of areas, including Fire Service personnel operating at major incidents in a highly hazardous environment.

Working as part of a team you will support the Health and Safety Manager, advising and supporting the Chief Fire Officer and Service Executive Board on implementing management systems that comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed by the relevant statutory health, safety and welfare provisions.

Experience and Skills

Key Skills:

  1. Developed advisory, negotiation and persuasion skills in order to encourage others to adopt necessary health and safety policies and procedures.
  2. Ability to interpret complex information to produce health, safety and welfare guidance with minimal supervision.
  3. Analytical and judgemental skills in order to assess health and safety needs and to respond appropriately and provide unbiased options.
  4. Ability to organise/prioritise work, co-ordinate a variety of tasks in a clear and logical way and meet agreed deadlines.
  5. Ability to design, deliver and evaluate health, safety, and fire training packages.
  6. The ability to keep up to date with new developments in the health, safety, and fire field.
  7. Excellent written and oral presentation skills for a variety of tasks, e.g. delivering training to staff.

Qualifications and/or experience:

Essential

  • A National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate or a National Vocational Qualification level 3 in Occupational Safety and Health, or a British Safety Council Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
  • An appropriate qualification (or appropriate relevant experience) in the specialist area of Fire and Rescue Health and Safety.
  • Teaching qualification (City & Guilds, level 3 or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Technical membership of the Chartered Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or associate membership of International Institute of Risk and Safety Managers (IIRSM).
  • RoSPA QSA Lead Auditor or equivalent.
  • IOSH Accident Investigation Course or equivalent.
  • Advanced Behavioural Safety Course.
  • IRM Business Risk Management Course.
  • Manual Handling - Train the Trainer Course.
  • Experience of providing an effective health and safety service within the relevant specialism, contributing to policy and procedural improvements, and providing a high level of advice and guidance.
