About the role

Are you passionate about workplace accessibility and equality?  Do you have what it takes to drive forward changes to ensure all our existing and future disabled employees have the tools and support they need to carry out their roles?

This role sits within the Orbis Partnership which encompasses East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and Surrey County Council.  You will be working across all three councils based in the IT & Digital service where you will work alongside colleagues in IT and HR and as well as with disability forums, workgroups and directly with our staff.

You will provide expert advice to customers on Accessibility products (hardware and software). Maintain an IT Accessibility Strategy, policy and corresponding roadmaps for each council within the Orbis partnership. Keep abreast of best practices and developments in the field of accessibility and contributing to the organisation’s goal of an accessible working environment.

Role

  • Provide advice and support to customers with technical accessibility issues and requests
  • Work with the Device Lifecycle Group to ensure Accessibility needs are met with regards to hardware offerings
  • Maintain Service Catalogue of Accessibility software aids
  • Develop assets required to embed best practice on accessibility, such as guides, policies and processes, working in collaboration with other stakeholders as necessary.
  • Coordinate and support stakeholder activities, such as meetings of the Accessibility Forum and Accessibility Steering Groups
  • Provide accessibility subject matter expertise to projects and stakeholders internally and externally when required.
  • Support detailed planning of the IT Accessibility Strategy, policy and corresponding Roadmap.
  • Develop assets required to embed best practice on accessibility, such as guides, policies and processes, working in collaboration with other stakeholders as necessary.
  • Work across the Orbis geography

Specialist Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Extensive hands-on knowledge and experience of accessibility as it relates to IT throughout the project delivery lifecycle (e.g. design, build, test).
  • Detailed knowledge of associated standards, e.g. WCAG, BS 8878, and their practical application.
  • Practical experience of accessibility testing and troubleshooting, preferably in a corporate or large organisation.
  • Significant knowledge of the broad accessibility needs and concerns of disabled people.
  • Hands-on experience of using Assistive Technologies, including Screen Readers, Screen Magnifiers, Text-to-Speech and Speech Control.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation (such as the Equality Act 2010) that relates to and impacts field of work.
  • Experience of advising project teams and other stakeholders on the implementation of accessibility best practices.

Desirable

  • Worked previously in an accessibility test manger or lead role.
  • Knowledge and experience of accessibility outside IT (e.g. built environment and BS 8300).
  • ITIL v4
