Salary up to £30,880 p.a. - 37 hours per week

Broxbourne Borough Council recognises the importance of Environmental Sustainability as one of the most important issues facing the world today. We have taken action on these issues in recent years including reducing the carbon footprint of Council buildings and protection and enhancement of biodiversity through careful management of the Borough’s many parks and open spaces. Sustainability is one of three priorities in the Council’s Corporate Plan for 2020-2024 and the new Local Plan makes substantial commitments to a sustainable future with requirements for biodiversity net gain at major development sites, a cycling and walking infrastructure plan and improvements to public transport.
However, we want to go further. We have created an Environmental Sustainability Panel and have allocated a £50,000 annual budget for the development of environmental projects. We are also working with other local authorities and partners in Hertfordshire on joint sustainability and climate change initiatives.
The new post of Sustainability Officer has been created to lead on our Environmental Sustainability agenda; implementing and delivering the Council’s Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan and supporting the work of the Environmental Sustainability Panel. You will provide professional and technical advice, support and encouragement to all Council teams in implementing sustainability principles and carbon reduction in service plans and policies. You will develop projects and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, increase biodiversity, promote sustainable transport, address fuel poverty and improve the Council’s environmental footprint.
You must have a degree in a relevant subject, preferably at post-graduate level, or considerable relevant experience. You must be an excellent communicator, experienced in producing reports, agendas, project plans and strategies as well as content for the Council’s communication channels. You will be a team player, confident in effectively working with and inspiring officers across the Council at different levels as well as with elected Members and colleagues from neighbouring authorities and community organisations. A valid driving license and access to own transport is essential.
