About the role

If you have a strong commitment to securing legal permanency for children through adoption, and are interested in applying to an Adoption Panel Member with Adoption South East we would welcome your interest.

Adoption South East (ASE) is a regional adoption agency providing adoption services on behalf of 4 local authorities (Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.) We have nearly 100 staff across a number of sites, and we operate 3 adoption panels, each with its own Independent chair. These panels bring vital independent scrutiny and challenge to adoption decisions, which have life-long implications for children, adopters and birth families.

Currently our panel business is conducted virtually on MS Teams but as we move on from the acute phase of the current Pandemic, operations will be reviewed, meaning that in person meetings may resume later in 2021.

We operate a Central List of members, meaning that although panel members have a home panel (Woking, Horsham or Uckfield), by agreement a panel member might occasionally sit on one of the other panels. This would be voluntary, but means that we can ensure quoracy of panel meetings across the organisation. At the current time we are hoping to recruit additional members for the Woking panel, which meets on alternate Tuesday mornings.

Panel members read detailed social work reports ahead of the panel meetings, and prepare questions for discussion. It is important that panel members are able to undertake preparation independently by accessing reports online (via a secure Sharepoint link.) Given the very personal nature of the information we share with panel members we require an absolute commitment to working confidentially and in accordance with General Data Processing Regulations.

Panel members are paid a £150 fee per session, plus travel expenses and payments are processed on behalf of Adoption South East by East Sussex County Council. The attendance fee is taxable, and it is the responsibility of panel members to declare this as income.

We therefore welcome applications from candidates with relevant personal or professional experience of adoption. Applications will be assessed on the basis of written submissions and interview-please complete our online application form including a supporting statement.
