The Leadership Office provides support to the political and corporate leadership of the Council. As Cabinet Policy Manager for Place, you will work closely with the Cabinet Members for Environment, Transport, Infrastructure and the Economy, as well as officers and senior leaders from across the Council.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with an interest in place-based policy wishing to gain experience working with elected members and senior stakeholders at the heart of the council. As Cabinet Policy Manager, you will be responsible for providing a link between Cabinet Members and officers across the service, ensuring Cabinet Members are adequately briefed, and ensuring the Leader of the Council is kept up to date with Place policy activity. You will also have line management responsibility for a Cabinet Support Officer and an Apprentice.

Key roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring that Cabinet Members are fully briefed
  • Managing a forward plan of activity
  • Preparing high level correspondence
  • Coordinating democratic processes
  • Regularly briefing the Leader on Place pod activity
  • Working with colleagues from across other teams to manage the public affairs programme
  • Maintain oversight of national and local policy developments and managing interdependencies in Cabinet portfolios

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • The ability to excel and prioritise in a fast-paced political environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage complex political relationships
  • Previous relevant experience of working in a political environment with senior stakeholders (or the ability to adapt quickly to such an environment)
  • Ability to forward plan and proactively manage complex work programmes
  • Ability to manage discrete projects independently
