ST LUKE’S C.E. PRIMARY, FORMBY

1:1 SEN SUPPORT TA VACANCIES (Grade D SCP 14-17)

 

The governors, staff and pupils of St. Luke’s CE Primary School are seeking committed and enthusiastic Teaching Assistants to join our successful and friendly team, to offer support to an individual pupil as he moves to Formby.

 St. Luke’s Primary is a vibrant, happy setting where pupils and staff members alike are valued and celebrated for the contribution they make to school life.  Staff work hard to ensure all pupils achieve their best across the curriculum; in return they are offered the opportunity to work as part of a talented, dynamic team in a friendly, welcoming environment, developing strong relationships with pupils, colleagues and families to deliver outstanding outcomes.

 

We have two vacancies for part-time (initially five mornings or 5 afternoons, with lunch arrangements to be agreed) temporary positions (initially until 31st August 2021) to support a pupil joining us in Year 2.  

 The successful candidate will: 

  • have GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in Maths and English
  • have proven excellent behaviour management skills
  • be willing to play and active role in the Year 2 team.
  • have some understanding of, or be prepared to undertake training in, autism-friendly teaching & learning strategies. 

Information specific to this pupil’s needs:

 A multi-sensory, autism-friendly approach is required to meet the pupil's specific learning needs, enabling them to access a specifically differentiated, highly personalised curriculum in the Year 2 setting.   The successful candidate will work closely with the Year 2 Team, SENCO, parents and external professionals to enable high-quality provision, tailored to the pupil’s needs. 

Requirements of the role:

 To address the pupil's social communication and interaction difficulties, and working closely with the Year 2 Team, SENCo and external professionals, the successful candidates will create an environment that reflects the learning needs of, and supports the inclusion of, a child with these difficulties.  Particular attention will be given to:

  • The sensory environment.
  • Physical structure of the classroom (desk placement, work group spaces, etc).
  • Visual timetable, with procedures for dealing with change and transition throughout the day.
  • Assistance to integrate at an appropriate and meaningful level with peers, both in classroom activities and at playtimes.

 

To address the pupil’s personal, social and emotional development, the successful candidates will:

  • Help the pupil develop relationships with adults and peers through close support and guidance, building the pupil’s confidence and developing their awareness of their place within the class/the wider school and the roles of others around them.
  • Help the pupil to access structured play, both within the classroom environment and in outdoor spaces, modelling and encouraging play practice.
  • Support the pupil in playing an active role in classroom routines, encouraging responsibility for small tasks.
  • Support the pupil in developing their understanding and acceptance of the needs of others, taking turns and sharing both physical and human resources.
  • Support the pupil in developing an awareness of their own emotions and in beginning to develop strategies to self-regulate extremes of emotion.

 To address the pupil’s specific language difficulties, the successful candidates will:

  • Enable and encourage the pupil to consistently listen to and follow simple instructions, developing sustained attention.
  • Support the pupil in verbalising relevant requests, to enable their access to activities and opportunities for learning.
  • Immerse the pupil in targeted language, following guidance from SaLT and other external agencies as appropriate.
  • Develop the pupil’s understanding of environmental language through use of a visual timetable, now/next visuals and a choice board.
  • Encourage interaction with adults whilst avoiding prompt dependency, initially using gesture and verbalisation.

 

To address the pupil’s communication and language understanding, the successful candidates will:

  • Work to develop the pupil’s attention by delivering short, structured play activities, increasing the pupil’s level of involvement and the duration of focus.
  • Deliver narrative and sequencing activities to develop attention and recall.
  • Use the pupil’s enjoyment of and enthusiasm for literacy activities to develop links with peers and provide opportunities for success.

 

To address the pupil’s physical development needs, the successful candidates will:

  • Support the pupil in developing familiarity with toileting routines in a new setting.
  • Support the pupil in accessing appropriate clothing for activities, e.g. outdoor coat.
  • Support the pupil in developing control in gross and fine motor activities.
  • Be mindful of the pupil’s sensory processing difficulties and sensitivities to a noisy, busy environment, providing appropriate activities and an appropriate environment to meet the pupil’s sensory needs.
  • Work closely with parents to extend the pupil’s diet, encouraging them to try new foods.

 

Successful candidates will also:

Support the school:

Where appropriate, to develop a relationship to foster close links between home and school.

To liaise, advise and consult with other members of the team supporting the pupil when asked to do so.

To be aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupils/teachers/school and to keep confidences appropriately.

To assist with the promotion/celebration of pupils' work through display at the direction of the class teacher.

To be aware of school policies and procedures.

 

Attend relevant training, including Inset days as requested.

Perform any other tasks, as directed by the Headteacher, which fall within the purview of the post.

 

Two posts are proposed: one morning post (8.45am-12noon) and one afternoon post (12.45-3.15pm Mon-Thurs and 2.45pm Friday).  Discussion will take place with the successful candidates to determine cover for the 45mniutes of lunchtime, which could be shared between the two posts or added to just one.

 Fixed term contracts until 31St August 2021 in the first instance, starting as soon as possible.
