About the role

This is an opportunity for a Caretaker Level 3 to join our friendly and supportive team at Etchingham Church of England School.

Etchingham has 109 pupils on roll, aged 4 to 11 years. The school was built in 2015 to a bespoke design and has a spacious building and grounds.

The Caretaker role is very important in ensuring that our learning environment is maintained in a safe and inspiring condition for our staff, pupils and wider community. The premises have been well maintained and this is an opportunity to build upon the great work done by the current post-holder.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be able to use their initiative and manage their own workload
  • Be proactive in maintaining our school in a good and safe condition, taking a pride in their work
  • Have high aspirations for themselves and our school
  • Understand the importance of Health & Safety, how it applies to schools and have experience of undertaking regular checks (fire alarm, legionella, site inspections etc) and COSHH regulations
  • Have good maintenance and DIY skills, including decorating, as defined in the job description
  • Be willing to undertake working at heights training and work at height on occasion
  • Be willing and able to clean our hall area and use a range of cleaning equipment in that task
  • Inspect and monitor the cleaning standards of our cleaning contract, ensuring that the school is cleaned to specification and reporting any deficiencies in standard
  • Liaise with, give access to and oversee the work of contractors (mostly during holiday periods)
  • Have good organisational and communication skills, as part of a small team
  • Work with the School Business Manager to plan the maintenance program of the site
  • Understand and implement site security measures, including responding to alarm call outs (for which additional payments are made)
  • Be able to support the Christian Ethos of the School

Approximately 3 hours a week are spent on cleaning the Hall in the early morning and the remaining 15 hours is for maintenance and caretaking tasks. The working hours are negotiable but the post-holder must be able to open up the site and undertake the cleaning of the Hall Monday to Friday, starting no later than 7.30am.

The post is for 52 weeks per year, with 21 days paid holiday, rising to 25 days after 5 years continuous service (plus all public holidays).

Visits to the School can be accommodated by arrangement outside of normal school times due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic.
