Salary: dependent on experience:
Band 8 £29,557 - £32,233 p.a. - educated to degree level as a minimum
Band 10 £35,744 - £39,880 p.a. - qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive)
Band 12 £44,862 - £48,874 p.a. - Post Qualified Experience Required

What is the role?
Reporting to the Principal Planning Solicitor, you will be one of the Planning and Highways Lawyers in the authority’s expanding Legal Services Department. You will work on progressing a caseload of section 106 agreements, section 278 agreements and general planning and highways advice for our busy Planning and Highways Team.
Who is the person?
You need to be:
- A qualified solicitor or legal executive.
- Have experience of drafting and negotiating section 106 agreements.
- Have a proven track record of professional achievement and have an excellent knowledge of planning law, policy and guidance.
- Be authoritative and persuasive in this challenging post.
- Be organised and have attention to detail as you will be dealing with a high caseload and be expected to prioritise and ensure work is completed within agreed timescales and ensuring excellent outcomes.
Have excellent communication and influencing skills as you will be dealing with people at all levels of the organisation and need to ensure your advice is understood.
Have a pragmatic and flexible approach to problem solving.
- Be able to work as part of a team to ensure a smooth delivery of the service and be flexible in being able to adapt to the changing needs of the team.
Have an understanding of working in a politically sensitive environment and preferably, experience in a local government legal service.
- Work effectively with colleagues and able to engage and develop relationships on behalf of Legal Services with our client departments, internal and external stakeholders.
- Be able to promote and maintain effective working practices, including compliance with LEXCEL practice standards and accompanying adherence to corporate policies and procedures including GDPR compliance.
- Be confident using IT systems (Microsoft suite) and a legal case management system.
- Be able to work remotely using appropriate technology and work in the office when required.
You will be able to demonstrate evidence of your experience and successes in the majority of the following:-
- Routine advice to planning officers
- Negotiation and drafting of section 106 agreements
- Advice on planning enforcement issues
- Advice on planning policy, the NPPF and PPGs
- Advice to Members and the Planning Committee
- Negotiation and drafting of section 278 agreements
- Advice on highways and rights of way matters, including stopping-up or diversion orders
