About the role

Head of Community Safety – East Sussex County Council

East Sussex County is looking for a new Head of Community Safety. You will be leading an already strong service, one that has recently been awarded significant investment to tackle substance misuse issues, is in the middle of the process of jointly recommissioning its domestic abuse and sexual violence services with key partners, and is increasingly confident in its ability to collaborate and drive improvements on important issues with local, regional and national partners.

You will provide collaborative leadership to a wide and high-profile partnership agenda. Managing three teams working across a number of policy areas. You will work imaginatively to commission effective services for domestic and sexual abuse and violence and substance misuse, aligning with our Core Offer and national legislation, harnessing opportunities for the Council and our communities.

In addition to our commissioning activities, you will be responsible for statutory services such as Prevent, our work on modern slavery and exploitation. You will also lead on managing our data and insight for community safety, support wider system efforts on safeguarding and exploitation.

Utilising your exceptional relationship building and communication skills you will effectively advise and influence at the highest level, strengthening partnerships, identifying and creating new ways of working, and empowering communities.

You will have a strong track record of managing in complex environments. You need to be comfortable developing and maintaining successful partnerships. You will have a keen eye for detail in analysing data whilst being able to retain the strategic oversight of multiple programmes of work.

This is a key leadership position within a large and complex directorate, and as such, the successful candidate will have significant team leadership and budget management experience.

Driving new ways of thinking, you will benefit from a collaborative management style, working with key partners, with the ability to engage, develop and drive services to achieve operational excellence, increasing efficiency and productivity.

You do not need a community safety background per se. Your leadership behaviours, commissioning and partnership management skills are what we’re looking for. You do need the talent to gain the trust and support of our partners, stakeholders, elected members and senior officers. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate success of leading and managing a team to achieve high quality service outcomes.

At East Sussex County Council we have developed our core offer, setting out clear priorities for services, being clear with our communities what we can achieve. Through this period of change we have embraced different ways of working and are now looking to build upon what we have achieved.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with the right experience, skills and knowledge and a proven track record of leadership.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Tom Hook, Assistant Director, Planning, Performance & Engagement on 07895 331141.
