About the role

We are looking for a diligent and ambitious candidate for a permanent role in our IT&D Data Solutions team. This is a new role within the organisation and provides opportunities to significantly transform how the Council works with data to provide insight to all levels of the organisation.

Brighton & Hove City Council has recently selected Power BI as its data visualisation tool of choice. Sitting alongside existing platforms like Business Objects and ArcGIS, Power BI is a key component of our Analytics Toolkit and will be critical in delivering self-service data insight across the Council.

The successful candidate must have experience of using Power BI, with experience of other reporting tools being an advantage. You will not only be able to use Power BI to create high-quality dashboards but also to configure and manage the whole platform for a growing community of data analysts and consumers.

Experience with more advanced analytical techniques and tools is desirable but not essential.

The role will lead on deployment and support for Power BI. As such, you will be passionate about great customer service. You will possess responsible time-management skills, enabling you to organise a sometimes disparate workload, meet deadlines and keep customers satisfied.

The successful candidate will not only possess technical skills but will be able to enthusiastically engage customers across the Council, demonstrating the art of the possible and using data visualisation to tell compelling stories. You will champion better use of data across the Council, identifying opportunities for innovation.

Please note we are also recruiting an Information Systems Analyst to join the IT&D Data Solutions team; a role that will report into this one.

Tasks and responsibilities

The role is based in the IT & Digital department of Brighton & Hove City Council. Working closely with colleagues in the Data Solutions team, the successful candidate will lead on our growing Power BI data visualisation platform.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and deliver the Power BI service, including configuration and upgrades
  • Customer support in the use of all components of the Power BI platform
  • Training for analysts in the use of Power BI
  • Establish and facilitate user forums for the Data Analyst Community within the Council
  • Evaluate other components of the Analytics Toolkit
  • Managed delivery of high-quality bespoke analysis
  • Demonstrate the art of the possible and delivering modern solutions to solve real business problems

The Data Solutions team also manages the Council's mapping and GIS platforms. The successful candidate will have opportunities to work with colleagues who specialise in those areas, as well as collaborate with other IT&D teams.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
