Director of Canterbury Environment Company

Based: Canterbury, Kent, United Kingdom

Salary: £80k+ potential performance incentive bonuses

Start date: ASAP

Closing date: 31 October 2020

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved at the very start of a new chapter as Canterbury City Council creates a local authority trading company, the Canterbury Environment Company, to manage its high-profile and universal waste and street cleansing service.

The Director of the Canterbury Environment Company will be the senior leader within the company, representing it at board level.

Initially, the role will ensure the smooth transition of the service from the outsourced privately-owned company that has provided it for the past 20 years.

Ultimately, the Director will lead the operational delivery team to deliver waste collection and street cleansing services across the district.

The Director will also be responsible for the development of the service and the introduction of initiatives such as commercial waste and recycling as well as frontline service innovations in order to achieve the highest quality and most cost-effective service possible to residents and businesses within the district.

You will have a detailed knowledge of:

  • Health and safety requirements impacting on frontline services
  • Principles of financial management for a small to medium company
  • Managing performance and developing staff
  • Policy, legislation and practice in relation to environmental services (or a related field)

You will be a leader who can motivate a workforce, can demonstrate an outcome-focused approach to service, possess excellent communication skills with the ability to command respect, trust and confidence and explain complex issues clearly.

You will be comfortable with your decisions being scrutinised by a well-informed public and passionate elected councillors.

You will also have management experience in the environmental services or waste industry and the right qualifications.

In return, Canterbury is a great place to work. Nestled in the Garden of England in east Kent, the district covers the bustling city of Canterbury with its World Heritage Sites and three universities, the popular coastal towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable as well as 24 beautiful villages.

Interview date to be confirmed.
