This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of an established and successful speech and language therapy service on the Isle of Wight. The Schools Speech and Language Support Team works in collaboration with schools to ensure the communication needs of all children are met within their school environment. The service is also working to develop our collaboration and co-production with parents and carers and children and young people.
From our recent (November 2019) Joint Local Areas SEND Inspection, inspectors found the following:
"A good speech and language therapy service is offered on the island. The service is provided jointly by the NHS and local authority. A strong core offer is available to all schools that includes training to enable staff to be more effective in the support of children with speech, language and communication needs. This core offer also includes the provision of a parent workshops."
The job purpose is to ensure delivery of required intervention to children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and provide support for schools and education settings to enable children and young people to access learning and positive peer experiences in their education environment. This will involve working with therapists, assistants and education staff within Island schools to meet the SLCN of children and young people. The post would ideally suit a therapist with experience of working in education settings at undergraduate or postgraduate level and would be appropriate for a newly qualified speech and language therapist.
You will receive regular supervision and support from highly skilled, trained and experienced speech and language therapists and there will be regular opportunities for training and continuing professional development.
The successful applicant will be working as part of an innovative, dynamic and highly supportive team, that is driven to ensure more positive outcomes for children, young people, schools and families on the Isle of Wight.

The employer will be the Isle of Wight Council and employment is on Isle of Wight terms and conditions. Hampshire County Council delivers, on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council, all of its children’s services functions and did so for an agreed period of five years from 1 July 2013, the original five year partnership arrangement under direction of the Secretary of State finished in 2018 but has been extended voluntarily by both local authorities for a further five years.
The management reporting line for this role is ultimately through Hampshire County Council Children’s Services Director/Assistant Director and managers who take operational responsibility for children’s services.
