We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated experienced Homeless Prevention Officer (or with the right skills and experience, a Senior Homeless Prevention Officer) to join our supportive, dynamic and knowledgeable housing team.
Are you as passionate about preventing homelessness as we are?
Do you have the experience and relevant housing/homeless legislation knowledge to join our team of professionals who provide an excellent Homeless Prevention and Housing Advice service to the residents of Basingstoke?
If so, an exciting opportunity has arisen within the Homeless Prevention Team.
You will need to have a demonstrable housing knowledge, proven experience of working in a housing advice or homeless environment, excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with colleagues and other agencies to provide an effective prevention focused service for homeless individuals and families, many of whom have multiple vulnerabilities and support needs.
You will be able to manage a caseload and most of all you must be committed to and have a clear understanding of the need for early intervention in a range of household problems that have the potential to cause a housing crisis.
In return, we are committed to providing ongoing training, and you’ll be given the opportunity to make your mark whilst further developing your experience and skills.
Our progressive attitude has made significant achievements in preventing homelessness, reducing the use of bed and breakfast accommodation and assisting the most vulnerable members of our community. These challenges are even greater as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The successful applicant will play a key role in continuing that record and will work across both our Homelessness Advice and Social Inclusion teams. They will maintain and build on existing relationships with wider partners and will gain a holistic knowledge of cross-organisational working. Their role will be integral to ensuring the council meets its duties under the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 (HRA) and they will preferably have proven experience and skills and a knowledge of homeless prevention, welfare rights and associated legislation.
You will be expected to undertake detailed housing options and support needs assessments and use these and their own knowledge and experience to prevent homelessness and advise homeless households on suitable accommodation options or assist them to secure accommodation via local support pathways. They will be expected to be able to make statutory homeless determinations under the HRA and understand the duties that these entail.
Integral to this will be the ability to offer advice, guidance and advocacy on all aspects of customer’s housing circumstances allowing them to help the customer achieve sustainable housing.
Part of what separates Basingstoke and Deane from other councils is our focus on person centred solutions and trauma informed care to both recognise a customer’s own concerns and problems, and use this understanding to guide the customer through a difficult and stressful time.
A full valid driving license is essential for this role.
This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent spoken English is an essential requirement for the role.
