The services delivered by the Communities, Economy and Transport Department (CET) have an enormous impact on the lives of local people and the natural environment. From operating waste facilities and registration offices, to maintaining roads and major infrastructure planning, the moment an East Sussex resident steps outside their front door, they are interacting with our work. Therefore, roles in our department offer enormous scope to make a positive impact on the quality of life for people and the environment of East Sussex.

We are looking for people who can help us to improve the links between the areas we operate in, such as using libraries, improving adult literacy, transporting vulnerable people to the shops to help keep them independent or installing high speed broadband to support businesses to modernise.

The Trading Standards Team uses a wide range of consumer protection legislation, to make sure goods and services sold and provided within the county are safe and legal. We cover a diverse range of areas such as product safety, animal health and welfare, illicit markets, food standards and counterfeit goods.

We take action to eliminate rogue trading and protect vulnerable consumers, as well as offering support and guidance to new and established businesses to help them grow. We also vet and approve local traders through our partnerships with Buy With Confidence, and work closely with organisations like Environmental Health, Sussex Police and HMRC to provide consumers and businesses with the confidence they need to conduct business safely and legally in the county.

We are looking for six Trading Standards Trainees to help us protect consumers and promote a safe and fair trading environment across the County. These appointments reflect the need for greater capacity to deal with the implications of the end of the EU transition period in December 2020.

The right candidates will help us to do this by rapidly learning to interpret and enforce a wide range of legislation using an intelligence-led approach to inspection, sampling, advice and education and investigation. Other aspects of the role will include assisting colleagues in tackling unfair and unsafe trading practices through enforcement, advice and education.

You will be extremely self-motivated willing to undertake a higher level vocational qualification and other training to help you excel in all you do. You will also have excellent customer service skills, be thorough in your approach and a team player. You will undertake a Level 4 qualification in Regulatory Compliance with a training provider and have a mentor within the work place to support you at every step. There will also be further dedicated training and development to enable you to contribute effectively with the demands of the service.

This is a unique opportunity for the right person to develop the skills and experience needed to embark on a professional career within the field of Trading Standards. The demands and expectations will be great but role will be rewarding and hugely beneficial.   There may also be access to the Trading Standards professional qualifications for a successful candidate who performs strongly in the role.
