Your New Role
Extremism is one of the greatest challenges the country faces and Local Authorities have a core role to play in building more resilient communities and tackling the harms extremists cause. This Home Office grant-funded role will help strengthen Portsmouth's work in this area and support national work to build partnerships with local communities and groups, a key part of the Counter-Extremism Strategy published on 19 October 2015 (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/counter-extremism-strategy). The CE Strategy is distinct and complementary to the Prevent Strategy as it seeks to challenge the broader causes and symptoms of extremism which are not limited to radicalisation and terrorism.
What is the role?
This is a high profile and demanding role. The successful candidate will support the delivery at local level of the Governments CE strategy which is central to the delivery of the Building a Stronger Britain Together (BSBT) programme and the delivery of the three main objectives, to:
- Increase the resilience of individuals and communities to extremism;
- Build the confidence and skills of individuals and communities to challenge extremism:
- Provide and promote direct positive alternatives to extremist narratives.
You will be expected to develop an extensive understanding of the extremism issues and challenges in your local area and identify ways to respond to these. You will lead on identifying and providing support to groups countering all forms of extremism at a local level whilst supporting work being delivered at a national level. As such, you will form part of a national network of Coordinators who share learning and best practice with one another across this agenda and with other local authorities without a Coordinator post.
Key priorities will include building understanding, Resilience in the community and countering extremism
What you'll need to succeed
You will need to have excellent communication and influencing skills and will be expected to represent the local authority at various internal and external meetings, working closely with the local community, senior council officers and elected councillors, as well as central Government. You will be able to demonstrate a high level of political awareness and link strategies for continuous improvement with the drive to achieve national, corporate and departmental standards and goals. Ideally you will have a good understanding of what constitutes both violent and non-violent extremism and how they can manifest in local communities, and the range of interventions that can create more cohesive communities.
The successful candidate must be willing to obtain security clearance (SC level). This will be facilitated by the Home Office.
