About the role
Lansdowne is one of just 14 Secure Children’s Homes in England. Secure Children’s Homes are subject to a high level of scrutiny by regulatory bodies. The home is currently 7 bedded, but is being extended and will have 12 beds when the works are complete, including enhanced provision facilities. Due to the expansion, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a new position of Assistant Manager. Accommodation of young people at Lansdowne is court ordered. They are resident because they are putting themselves or others at risk of extreme harm. The Assistant Manager needs to work in partnership with education and health colleagues to ensure children are safe.
Reporting directly to the Registered Manager, responsibilities include:
- Deputise for the Registered Manager in their absence and so must have sound knowledge of the role of a Registered Manager.
- Be able to dynamically risk assess situations to make sure the children are effectively safeguarded.
- The Assistant Manager will be directly managing three Deputy Homes Managers and so must have sound knowledge of appointment support, induction, supervision, appraisals and HR policies to ensure effective monitoring of practice development and performance management.
- The Assistant Manager will be responsible for ensuring that planning meetings, Looked After Child Reviews and Secure Accommodation reviews result in deputy managers initiating and implementing robust individual child care plans and risk assessments in order to address the reasons for admission and work in line with the local authority care plan.
- The Assistant Manager will be responsible for ensuring that on a day-to day basis the staff team are working positively with young people who experience emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties.
- The building is highly technical and relies on complex electronic systems including CCTV, door locking mechanisms, alarm systems and key trackers. The building has bespoke backup and support systems. The security of outer perimeters and internal areas is of paramount importance. The Assistant Manager must work closely with individuals maintaining these systems.
- The post holder is responsible for the care of emotionally traumatised young people who display extreme levels of challenging (both verbally and physically) and self-harming behaviour. As well as having oversight of the day to day management of the home, the post holder needs to be able to develop effective relationships with the young people in order to be able to risk assess the home and the young peoples’ interactions with each other and with staff within the home.
- Managers of the home are responsible for the well-being of the staff. The frequency of safeguarding incidents that are reportable is high in this role, and at times it is stressful and emotionally demanding.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
