Responsible for the leadership, management and strategic development of the Councils Crematorium Services, you will oversee the day to day operation of this important high profile and high performing service, ensuring that exemplary standards of customer care are achieved throughout the funeral, cremation and commemoration process. You will act as the council's technical expert on legislation and compliance for the crematoriums, ensuring that the services operate in accordance with all regulatory requirements. You will play a key role in the development and delivery of capital development projects, large procurement processes and service improvement programmes.
The Crematorium Service has recently been brought under the direct management of the new Council having previously operated under a Joint Committee. This is a great time to take over the Service and maximise the opportunities this presents. You will play a key role in enhancing and developing our Crematorium services, building on the sound reputation of the Service and embedding it in the heart of our local communities. There is significant scope for customer focused innovation and future business development and you will play a key role in delivering substantial capital investment projects, including the re-procurement and replacement of new cremators at The Chilterns site.
About the role/Key Accountabilities
Manage the crematorium service and all aspects of the daily operation of the crematoriums ensuring that this is accordance with legislative requirements, codes of practice and Council policies and procedures
Develop and grow the crematoriums businesses for the Council, ensuring the provision of a high quality competitive service through the identification of external market forces and competitors and the implementation of commercial customer focused initiatives.
Work with key external and internal stakeholders including users of the service, the local community and representatives of the funeral industry, to ensure the provision of a responsive, customer focused and comprehensive crematorium service.
Identify and embrace opportunities for change, influencing and engaging others to contribute to the continual improvement of the service, including digital customer focused solutions.
About the Business Unit
The Crematorium Service sits within Neighbourhood Services and is focused on delivering an exceptional and personal service to our customers. The Council operates two crematoria; The Chilterns, Amersham and Bierton Crematorium, Aylesbury. You will be responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of both sites, working with an established team responsible for all elements of the business including cremation, customer service and grounds maintenance. The Chilterns is an established and busy facility which has been serving the local community for over 30 years. Bierton Crematorium is a newly built facility which opened to the public in 2019 with capacity to further develop the business. The Service operates Monday to Saturday with some weekend work required. We are able to offer remote working but you will mainly work on site at The Chilterns with some travel required between the two sites. Living accommodation is available on The Chilterns site if required.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with management experience in a customer facing regulatory field. Experience of working in a senior technical or compliance role within the cremation/bereavement services industry is desirable. You will be a strong team player who possesses excellent communication skills, meeting our customers at one of the most important and memorable times in their lives and positively dealing with them with empathy and understanding.
An experienced people manager, you will be able to lead, motivate and develop your team to deliver an exceptional service for our customers and the Council. In addition you must have experience of successfully developing and implementing customer focused change programmes. You will work with a range of external and internal stakeholders and must have the authority and credibility to effectively build relationships, influence and engage others.
The Service is busy and demanding and you will require excellent planning, time management and organisational skills, enabling you to manage a complex workload, prioritising and setting deadlines and reacting to changing demands on a daily basis.
