We are seeking a Democratic Services Officer with initiative and drive to join a small but busy team supporting the democratic processes of the Council and helping to ensure that decisions can be taken effectively and lawfully. This will involve co-ordinating and servicing meetings of the Council’s committees as well as some working and task groups, and will include preparing and publishing agendas, reports and minutes. Due to the public health emergency, all public meetings are currently held remotely using video conferencing technology (e.g. Zoom).
The team has recently taken on the role of supporting the Council’s scrutiny function. The post holder will help in the work of developing an annual work programme and managing in depth task and finish scrutiny reviews. This will involve the use of formal project management methodology to scope and deliver reviews and other assigned projects.
The team includes responsibility for electoral services. It is likely the successful candidates will be asked to assist with the administration of elections and the registration of electors during periods of peak activity. The core part of the job will revolve around committee administration work. Many of the meetings are held outside working hours so that flexibility for evening working is required.
We are looking for an individual who is able to demonstrate an enthusiastic and systematic approach, have some awareness of political considerations, able to prioritise work with minimal supervision, and able to meet strict deadlines. IT literacy is also desired. Ideally, applicants will have some working knowledge and experience of committee administration and governance structures, with particular reference to the role of the Scrutiny Committee in monitoring decisions of the executive.
