West Berkshire Council is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Service Manager to take responsibility for the following teams:
- The Safeguarding Adults Team
- The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Team
- The Complaints Manager
The teams play a key role in ensuring that West Berkshire Council’s support to vulnerable adults continues to be of a high quality. The role requires a high level of joint-working with other teams in Adult Social Care, linked teams within the council and a range of external partners including the Police and Health services. We work in close partnership with our neighbours and are core members of the West of Berkshire Safeguarding Adults Board.
As a prospective candidate, you will need to have a solid understanding of this complex field, demonstrating significant knowledge and experience of the legislative framework and practice framework. You will also need to demonstrate the ability to make safe and effective decisions in a timely manner, to prioritise activity appropriately in response to risk and be committed to service user and community engagement, ensuring that local provision meets the needs of vulnerable people in West Berkshire.
Beyond the specialist work regarding Safeguarding and DoLS, you will also need to demonstrate the more generic skills of a Service Manager. You will need to be an experienced, persuasive and confident manager with excellent communication skills and analytical acumen with significant experience of managing HR issues and confidence in managing change.
As a Service Manager you will also play a wider role within Adult Social Care and the council as appropriate, contributing your expertise to the work of others.
This role has been identified as public facing in accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2017; the requirement to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English applies.

This role requires the incumbent to have a car available at work to undertake his/her duties as they will be expected to undertake at least 1500 business miles per year. Essential Car User status attracts a lump sum allowance paid on a monthly basis as well as a free car parking space if he/she works at one of the Council’s corporate buildings.
