Bereaved by Suicide Outreach Worker – Supporting Survivors of Suicide (SSOS)
27 hours per week – fixed term until 31 March 2021 in first instance
Salary £27,041 per annum pro rata – according to post qualifying experience and qualification requirements
Under normal conditions based in Newhaven with travel to outreach and delivery locations across E. Sussex
We recognise due to the current circumstances, and as a result of the pandemic, that at least initially this role will need to be further developed and delivered in an amended way and whilst working at home. SCDA will provide equipment to enable the post holder to do so, and the rest of the counselling team (and much of SCDA generally), is now successfully working at home and delivering services differently i.e. by phone or over IT platforms such as Teams and Zoom. When government guidance allows and after risk assessments are concluded for this service area, we hope to reintroduce face to face delivery, whilst acknowledging and observing appropriate social distance measures.
Supporting Survivors of Suicide (SSOS), is an ESCC funded partnership project between SCDA and Counselling Plus Community (CPC), where SCDA is the lead delivery partner. The service has recently been enhanced with funding from Public Health England and the STP to provide effective and timely outreach support for anyone bereaved by suicide (families and carers, friends and colleagues) concentrating primarily on the Havens, Hailsham, Eastbourne, Hastings and Rother.
The Bereaved by Suicide Outreach Worker aims to deliver a timely postventive, local support service providing appropriate, flexible, psychological support, including psychoeducation (information giving), assessing risk and monitoring for symptoms of trauma (including secondary trauma); and providing information and signposting to organisations that might be able to meet practical needs that arise following a death e.g. relating to financial matters.
To apply you will ideally be either a qualified, experienced and if possible BACP accredited counsellor; with significant experience and a sound understanding of counselling/psychotherapy; or hold social work qualification and associated experience. You will require extensive experience of assessing individuals, facilitating groups in a therapeutic setting and particularly in relation to clinical judgements about risk. A track record of successful partnership work in a complex, multi-agency environment, reporting to funders and others and the ability to successfully develop and implement new initiatives and services is crucial to the ongoing success of the project.
This role requires excellent communication, professional and personal ethics and boundaries and the ability to work effectively with vulnerable people. Post is subject to DBS at enhanced level.
