No two days are the same in Brighton & Hove City Council’s Building Surveying Team! If you like genuine diversity in your Building Surveying work and are looking to learn new skills, then we have a fantastic opportunity for you to contribute to our unique City of Brighton & Hove.
About the role
Reduce your carbon footprint, reduce your time commuting and get a genuine work / life balance.
From finding solutions to rectifying defects, undertaking all kinds of refurbishments to organising a far-reaching programme of planned maintenance works, we deal with schools, social care premises, non-housing buildings, listed historic buildings, etc. These posts are a chance for you to contribute to our City in a positive, meaningful way.
We need team players who have a flexible approach, are strong on Health and Safety, good communication and organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure in our trusted, busy team of professionals.
You will be well supported by the team as you grow your career whether you are qualified or working towards qualification as a Building Surveyor of the RICS or CIOB. We welcome applications from Graduates, will help you through your APC with work time to study and provide a programme of in-house training and CPDs to help you develop and succeed. As an incentive, when you qualify we will even pay your annual subs.
You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of Client teams across the City who will value and respect your input. We promote a commercial approach and will remain sustainably independent as we generate fees through the works we manage. We continue to secure further programmes of work and need to fill these posts with the right people.
A message to you from one of the team ‘Having worked for BHCC for just over three years now, there is one thing that has struck me – the variety of work. From the Brighton Centre to school buildings to the seafront and historic clocktowers, I have carried out repairs, maintained and restored such a varying degree of construction types. No project ever feels daunting as there is a wealth of experience in our team, that I know I can rely upon for support and advice whenever needed.’
In return you will enjoy a package of benefits that includes;
- a healthy work life balance with flexible working hours
- a laptop and iPhone

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency's Points-based Immigration System.
From 6 April 2011 the Home Office has placed a permanent restriction on the number of migrant workers that all Tier 2 (General) Sponsors can recruit. Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.
We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as disabled, LGB, female or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.
As part of Brighton & Hove City Council's ongoing commitment to redeployment, please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any stage of the recruitment process, without prior notice if a suitable redeployee (internal employee at risk of redundancy) is identified.
