About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented, forward-thinking and experienced MIS Report Writer to join the Funding Compliance & IT Team at Surrey Adult Learning (SAL).

Every year, SAL offers over 3,000 courses in its seven dedicated adult learning centres and around 100 other community-based venues such as schools and children’s centres.

With funding from the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and learners’ tuition fees, SAL offers a broad range of qualification-based courses such as GCSEs, ESOL and Functional Skills, alongside non-accredited courses such as foreign languages, arts and crafts. For over 12,000 learners every year, these courses represent life-changing opportunities to realise their full potential by developing the skills they need for life and work, as well as a means to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing.

As a member of SAL’s IT Team, the Report Writer will develop, deploy and maintain all aspects of SAL’s data reporting systems. Accurate, timely and task-specific data is critical to SAL’s success. Through face-to-face and virtual meetings, the Report Writer will liaise closely with staff from across the organisation to ensure the IT Team are able to satisfy their requirements for high quality, meaningful management information.

The Report Writer must project a positive, professional approach and will be able to demonstrate at interview:

  • Prior experience working with the SQL Server technology stack for the interpretation and analysis of large and highly complex data sets
  • In-depth knowledge and experience using SSRS, SSDT and MS Report Builder for data manipulation from various data sources and structures. Knowledge of Power BI desirable
  • Prior experience of data management in the education sector desirable, ideally with the Tribal ebs learner management system
  • Familiarity with FE/ESFA funding methodologies, Ofsted performance indicators and Qualification Achievement Rates (QAR) desirable
  • Knowledge and experience working with ODBC, XML, HTML, REST APIs and web-based data dashboard technologies
  • Awareness of the principles of information governance; data security and the GDPR
  • Ability to present and disseminate information via queries, reports and/or dashboards as appropriate to the nature of the source data and the requirements of the user

On occasion, the Report Writer will work flexibly in terms of working hours and location in order to attend scheduled meetings, to provide occasional staff training and to resolve faults that cannot be addressed remotely.
