The Access and Inclusion Service is an integral part of Children’s Services ensuring all children and young people within Central Bedfordshire access an education.

 

We are looking to recruit 2 x Traveller Education Liaison Officer's (TELO) for 3 days per week term time only. You would be part of a small team of 3 TELO’s supporting the work of the Access and Inclusion Service within the Traveller community. This is an exciting and interesting role where you will find your greatness in working towards ensuring that all Traveller children receive their legal right to an education.

 

You will support parents, schools and other providers in the admission of traveller children and to monitor their subsequent attendance. The Access and Inclusion Service works within the Children’s Services locality areas and this position will be allocated to the Dunstable & Houghton Regis locality areas. You will engage with the parents of Traveller children and support them with meeting their legal duties regarding education and also work closely with a number of other services within the council. Some lone working will be required.

 

You will contribute to the statutory tasks the Local Authority has regarding Traveller children who are Electively Home Educated, Missing from Education and where the School Attendance Order process has been invoked.

You will have a level 3 qualification or relevant experience working with Schools and/or families. Previous experience of working within the Traveller community is beneficial although not essential. This role requires the ability to build working relationships with both schools and families and offering professional support and challenge when required. You will have a good understanding of the obstacles faced by the families you work with and the ability to build and maintain rapport. You will be making a positive difference to the lives of children and families and it is essential you have a positive, non-judgemental, empathetic and sensitive manner. This post requires competent IT skills in order to record and maintain accurate data and the ability to manage your own caseload. A full induction will be provided.
