About the role

East Sussex County Council is expanding the residential provision for looked after children. Lansdowne, in Hailsham, is one of just 14 Secure Children’s Homes in England. The home is currently 7 bedded, but is being extended and will have 12 beds when the works are complete, including enhanced provision facilities. Accommodation of young people at Lansdowne is court ordered. They are resident because they are putting themselves or others at risk of extreme harm.

We are also opening a new children’s home in St Leonards. This will provide high quality residential care for looked after children from the county. This is a new exciting provision which will model an integrated structure of multi-agency working to best meet the needs of children placed there.

Children in care are some of the most vulnerable in the community and looking after them is one of our most important responsibilities. We need people who are able to deliver high quality care, to meet the physical, emotional, health and social needs of children and young people in our homes.

If you are passionate and committed to working with adolescent children, want to help them reach their full potential, develop and maximise their opportunities; then we would like to hear from you. You will have had experience of working directly with children and can demonstrate a good understanding of child care and child development. Our looked after children can often be challenging and will require a professionally nurturing approach. Residential Childcare Workers will need to be committed, adaptable to children's needs and go the extra mile. We want you to make a real difference in their lives.

We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate all of the above, have good communication skills, the ability to listen to children, act on their behalf, as well as being flexible enough to be part of the larger team around the child.

The successful candidates will work on a rota basis. The post includes shift work, weekend working and sleep-in duties (additional payments for sleep-ins will apply).

Candidates will be selected in line with recommendations of the Warner Report, which includes a brief written exercise and interviews with both professionals and children.

In addition to your salary, our benefits package includes:

- Training and funding to attain your Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare through the Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Apprenticeship programme.

- A pension scheme.

- A planned rolling rota – so you will always know when you are due to work.

- Additional sleep in payments.

- Continuing professional development support.

- Opportunities for career development.

- A range of ESCC staff benefits including discounts on shopping, travel and leisure activities.

- Access to staff counselling and employee assistance programme.

Note this post is exempt from the limitations of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and as such all instances of previous cautions and convictions will need to be disclosed in any application.
