About the role
At Surrey County Council we are looking for temporary Residential Support Workers to assist with the delivery of our front line care service to help support children and young people within our Children’s Homes during this unprecedented time. You will be required to work flexibly as part of the team under a zero hour contract. Shift patterns may include some unsociable hours; including evenings, weekends, bank holidays and sleep-ins. The rate of pay is £13.05 per hour, and is subject to an additional enhancement in lieu of annual leave/sickness.
An enhanced DBS 'Disclosure and Barring Service' check for regulated activity (formerly known as CRB) and the Children's and Adults' Barred List checks will be required for this role, if you are successful.
Currently, we have a number of Residential Homes operating across the County which aim to provide a safe and stable environment for children and young people with different ages and needs. We are looking for positive role models who can work directly with children and young people, build and maintain meaningful relationships and are passionate to empower and encourage young people to make positive life changes.
About the role
As a Residential Support Worker your responsibilities may include:
- Working directly with children and young people living in Children’s Homes to maximise their opportunities and potential.
- Supporting children and young people with tasks such as cooking and personal care.
- Co-ordinate, promote and engage in activities with children young people.
- Developing and maintaining a stimulating and nurturing living environment, where young people feel happy and safe.
- Working to a high standard in line with OFSTED inspection framework requirements including working towards the quality standards for children's home.
- Working in partnership with other agencies.
- Maintaining good communications and continuity of work practice within the Children’s Homes through attendance at, and contribution to regular team meetings.
What we are looking for
At Surrey we are keen to hear from individuals who have previous experience working with children, young people and/or families. For the this post you won’t necessarily need experience working in a residential setting, however you will need to demonstrate experience of working with and understanding some of the complex issues many children and young people in care may have. You will need to have empathy, resilience and a sense of humour.

As a bank contract, this role provides flexibility so that you would be able to return to your non-SCC employment when required.
This position may require you to travel to various Children’s Homes across Surrey to ensure support is provided to meet service demands. Our homes are located in:
Where possible, we will try to match people to roles that are geographically close to their home to reduce unnecessary travel, however this position may require you to travel to various locations across Surrey to engage directly with children, young people and families. Mileage will be reimbursed for required travel.
