Wokingham Borough Council are seeking a Place Services Manager to look after its Waste Management and Environmental Services team. This is a vital senior role overseeing a number of contracts and partnerships.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is an exciting time to join WBC as we review our waste service to drive forward increased recycling rates to meet a key objective of our Climate Emergency Strategy. This is one of the highest value services in the Council that impacts on all of our customers and it will be your responsibility to lead this review and to build consensus to agree objectives and an action plan to deliver service improvements.
You’ll also have oversight of our other vital contracts in Street Cleansing, Grounds Maintenance and Highways, as well as managing our Country Parks services. We’ll look to you to ensure smooth operational delivery of day to day services, deliver excellent customer service and drive efficiencies.
Whilst your team is relatively small with only three direct reports, you’ll have indirect responsibility for over one hundred staff on the ground delivering our environmental services. We therefore need an exceptional leader and manager who can inspire confidence and take people with them.
As well as managing our contracts, you’ll also oversee our shared services and partnerships including our Waste Disposal contract with Bracknell and Reading councils and our Public Protection Partnership with Bracknell Forest and West Berkshire. Experience managing a range of complex contracts is therefore vital, as is confidence liaising with various partners and stakeholders in different organisations.
We’re looking for an experienced and ambitious contract management professional who can give our team the support and structure we need to do our best work. This is a role with engagement and influence that spans beyond the borough to our partners, contractors and key stakeholders. How you communicate with people is key, so we need an expert negotiator and leader.
Whilst knowledge of the waste industry is crucial to this role, what’s equally important is your track record of partnership working and managing contracts in an effective and efficient way. We want someone who can optimise the services provided by our contractors and who can help us continually improve the way we run things. Waste services are vital to any council and the work you do will keep our borough running smoothly.
At Wokingham we have recently declared a climate change emergency. You’ll play a vital role in facing this challenge and will sit on the team running our Climate Emergency programme. We’re therefore looking for someone with credentials in green sustainability and an in-depth knowledge of climate issues.
As well as strong operational experience, a Waste qualification and a degree in a relevant field is desirable.
Wokingham is situated in the heart of the thriving Thames Valley and is consistently voted one of the best places to live in the UK. This is an exciting time to join as the council is delivering substantial infrastructure projects and new housing.
Wokingham Borough Council offers a range of employee benefits including generous annual leave, flexible working opportunities and an excellent pension. We’re committed to making you feel empowered in your work, whether that’s through approachable and engaged management, or extra training to enhance your expertise. This is combined with great development opportunities, meaning you’ll feel supported and encouraged at every stage of your career.
Ours is a high support, high challenge work environment, where people can fulfil their full potential.
Closing date for applications is Monday 30th March 2020 with interviews expected between 27th April - 1st May 2020.
