About us

At Essex County Council, what we do impacts the lives of over 1.4 million residents. We work hard to meet our residents’ needs – from protecting vulnerable children, to helping older residents remain independent; from improving quality of life through better public health, to unlocking economic opportunities across our towns and cities. We need to take decisions based on high-quality insights and be disciplined in the way we track our progress and performance. Our brand-new Performance & Business Intelligence group will help us do this and so much more.

About you

As a Performance Officer, it’ll be your job to turn our deep well of data into insights that can help senior leaders take operational and strategic decisions. Working to support one of the council’s key business areas – Adult Social Care, Children Services, Place & Public Health, or our corporate functions - you’ll build reports that tell a story, exposing the questions our senior leaders need to focus on. You’ll develop a role as trusted technical advisor – helping managers and directors to interpret tightly defined performance metrics and understand what the data means for their business.

It’s all in the visualisation. We’re looking for creative use of reporting solutions such as Microsoft Power BI. You’ll own the data, and you’ll be in the room when the issues are debated. You’ll be a key part of a new team building the council’s capacity to ask and answer difficult questions.

Knowledge, skills and experience

On top of your ability to manipulate data and present with flair, you’ll need strong people skills. You’ll collaborate with business areas and analysts, making sure intelligence is aligned to the Council’s strategic priorities and goals.

We’re an evidence-led organisation, and you’ll also need to understand the complexities of working in a political environment and be able to appreciate and respond to different perspectives. We’ll also expect you to show the resilience required to deliver difficult messages and make robust recommendations.

In return, you can look forward to an excellent rewards package, as well as flexible working and long-term career opportunities.

We are recruiting for roles that will be aligned to support the council’s main business functions – Adults Social Care, Children and Family Services, Place and Public Health and corporate services.
