About the role 

SEN Specialist Practitioner Family Support Worker 0.8 fte, year round permanent contract

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Autism and Language Team within the Brighton and Hove Inclusion Support Service (BHISS). BHISS is based at The Music and Art Building, County Oak Avenue, Hollingbury, Brighton. As a Family Support worker, working 4 days per week, you would be part of a team of Family Support Workers and Specialist SEN Teachers within BHISS. This is a peripatetic post, involving visiting families in their homes on your own.

All families who have a child or young person with Developmental Language Disorder and/or a diagnosis of autism have the opportunity to access the Family Support Work offered by the Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service - Autism and Language Team.

A Family Support Worker is required who has high levels of self-efficacy and resolve to support families through often emotionally charged and challenging situations. You will have the ability to understand complex and dynamic situations quickly and respond appropriately.  You would be providing support through delivering workshops to groups of parents, and  supporting identified families via home visits, meetings, and telephone calls. This role is therefore peripatetic.

The role of Family Support Worker is vital in:

  • Offering front line support before services such as Front Door for Families may need to be involved
  • Enabling families to better understand and manage their child’s disability
  • Ensuring that families have access wider community support
  • Promoting disability positively within the community
  • Contributing to a wide variety of professional and strategic meetings, including child protection and Team Around Family meetings.
