We are looking for a Policy and Planning Manager to take the lead in delivering local planning policy documents, including a new Local Plan, for Central Bedfordshire. This is an exciting time for Central Bedfordshire. As one of the largest Unitary Authorities in the country, our unique geographical location means we are at the focus of national conversations around growth. The government has identified the Oxford to Cambridge Arc as a priority area for development and economic investment, with ambitions to deliver up to one million homes by 2050. Significant investment in infrastructure, with schemes such as East-West Rail, has the potential to act as a catalyst for future growth in Central Bedfordshire.
The emerging Local Plan provides a strong basis for delivering much needed homes and jobs, as well as protecting our green and historic assets. However, our commitment to an early partial review of this plan will provide us with the opportunity to consider the impacts of the Arc more broadly and to ensure Central Bedfordshire uses this opportunity to benefit from this ambition, working in partnership with the Government to bring forward higher levels of growth and enhancing our economy.

You will be responsible for managing the day to day operation of a team focused on the delivery of the Council’s Local Plan and all other policy formulation relevant to the Service.
- Leading the Local Plans team – managing, development and appraising staff
- Delivering local policy documents, including the Local Plan, Local Development Scheme and Supplementary Planning Documents.
- Providing written and verbal evidence to Local Plan Examinations in Public
- Work cohesively with partners and colleagues to ensure a joined up approach in the development and implementation of jointly agreed policies and approaches, in liaison with the Strategic Plan Partnership Manager.
- Be responsible for the analysis of, and response to, national and local policies and changes in legislation and their effect on the Council’s Place making agenda.
- Manage a proactive programme of ongoing community engagement to continuously inform policy creation and decision making.
Your qualifications, skills and experience
You will have a degree or equivalent recognised qualification in Planning and be an experienced RTPI accredited planning professional. You will have a proven track record of policy development and analysis and of managing a programme of community engagement to inform policy creation and decision making, as well as line management experience.
