Salary: £45,101 - 47,500 pa
Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) are seeking to recruit a Principal Environmental Protection Officer within our Contracts and Technical Services department to be based in the Council’s Civic Offices in Epping, Essex. EFDC are in the process of changing how they think about service delivery in the future and this role is a key part of that process. The district will be experiencing an unprecedented period of development due implementation of our Local Plan. The district is diverse and varies from urban to rural with varying levels of industry and residential development which means the complaints and requirements of the role can be diverse.
The post holder will be the lead technical officer for delivery of Council services across private water supplies, pollution, rural drainage and associated enforcement matters. The district has a significant number of private water supplies and rural drainage systems mainly in areas not served by mains water and sewerage. Whilst not the core focus of this role, experience of contaminated land would be an asset to work with the contaminated land officer for Part IIA Investigations and support planning consultations.
The post holder will be expected to have extensive knowledge of nuisance and pollution legislation, private water supply legislation and effectively gathering evidence. The post holder would need extensive enforcement experience and confidence to lead inspections and risk assessment and resolve various complaints across pollution and water quality issues. A full driver’s license will be essential to site visits by team, pool vehicle or personal vehicle. A flexible and adaptable approach is also needed to be a senior member of a multidisciplinary team dealing with flood risk, private sector drainage land drainage and a historical landfill site.
The successful applicant will need to have a science based honours degree or relevant work experience, with a solid understanding of pollution, investigation and enforcement techniques and GIS systems, as well as contaminated land knowledge preferred.
