We are looking to appoint two Legal Specialists. We have one full time post and one part time post (30 hours) so please state your preference for full or part time when applying. 

One of the successful candidates may have the opportunity to apply for additional responsibilities which includes the Deputy Monitoring Officer function. The Deputy Monitoring Officer will support the Monitoring Officer to ensure that the Council, its officers, and its Elected Councillors, maintain the highest standards of conduct in all they do. An additional payment will be applied for these additional responsibilities. This is a fantastic development opportunity for an aspiring leader.

Job Title: Specialist – Legal (Planning Solicitor)    

This is an opportunity to play a key role within the Legal service, providing specialist legal advice and advocacy for all matters relating to planning.

 

What we’re looking for…

  • Someone comfortable working at pace to deliver efficient and cost effective legal services within a culture of customer focus, continuous improvement, service excellence and employee development. 
  • An individual who has extensive experience in planning law and policy (including planning enforcement and spatial planning) with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal issues to Members and Officers and to provide legal advice accordingly. 
  • Someone with experience in drafting, negotiating and completing S106 planning obligations without supervision, as well as drafting notices, orders, instructions, legal proceedings and any other documents required. 
  • An ability to act as the Council’s advocate in planning and enforcement matters, presenting the Council’s case at court, public inquiry and tribunal to the highest standards, and instructing Counsel where appropriate. 
  • Someone with experience of attending and providing high quality advice to Council committees, officer groups and other meetings, and advising on corporate, constitutional and planning probity issues.

You will be a qualified solicitor who has gained a significant amount of post qualification experience working within the public and/or private sector.

  • An individual who has front facing client experience and who is comfortable attending meetings, providing high quality, timely and appropriately pitched advice and who has the ability to effectively communicate complex legal issues to Members and Officers. 
  • Someone with extensive Commercial Property Law experience in all aspects of freehold and leasehold acquisitions and disposals (including complex development site sets ups, as well as more routine conveyancing), and in the general landlord and tenant arena (both in respect of small-scale one unit lettings and also in relation to multi let properties). 
  • Experience in setting up and advising companies in their day to day running and governance, or an interest in developing expertise in this area. 
  • Excellent drafting skills, attention to detail and a confident negotiator, and some experience of property litigation would be welcome.

You will be a qualified solicitor who has gained a significant amount of post qualification experience working within the public and/or private sector.   

Both roles will be based in the SSDC office in Brympton Way, Yeovil where we operate agile working practices, but you may need to travel to other offices, authorities and agencies in the region.
