About the Post:

Barnsley is changing and with a recently adopted Local Plan aimed at preserving what is special about the borough whilst also providing significant economic and housing growth opportunities, now is a great time to be joining our forward-thinking and dynamic Planning & Building Control Service.  The Local Plan identifies a number of large-scale urban extensions, the likes of which have not been seen in the borough for generations.  The borough also sits at the heart of Transport for the North’s Southern Pennines Corridor where a number of major transport infrastructure projects are anticipated, including HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail and potential strategic highway improvements.  In readiness for this, we are restructuring the service to focus on maximising these opportunities to create fantastic, sustainable and resilient places which we will all be proud to have played our part in delivering.  

We are looking for a Clerk of Works to oversee highway works on site.  The Clerk of Works will be part of a new team reporting to a senior engineer and will be responsible for ensuring that the council’s adheres to its duties under Sections 38 and 278 of the Highways Act.  The post provides the opportunity for a varied and exciting workload on a whole range of sites and the successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the existing and new highway network.  

We are looking for a candidate who has experience of carrying out or inspecting a full range of improvement/maintenance works on the public highway and the ability to oversee such works.  The post holder will also require knowledge of local and national policies, procedures and legislation relevant to the area of work, including Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015. They should also possess good communication, negotiation, organisation and interpersonal skills.
