Havering’s Building Control Service is seeking to appoint a Building Control Apprentice to join our team to administer and enforce the Building Regulations and associated legislation. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and enjoy providing a helpful and responsive service to our clients and have an understanding of the Building Construction process and Legislative framework.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, customer care and be capable of effectively managing workloads

Building Control Apprentice

Year 1-£11292 (£6 per hour)  Year 2-National minimum wage dependent on age  (if under 18  remain on the £6p/h).

To administer and enforce the Building Regulations and associated legislation. To provide a comprehensive Building Control Service to the public in ensuring that their building works comply with the Building Regulations.

The postholder must have experience of dealing with the public including in potential confrontational situations. They must have a basic understanding of the Building Acts and Regulations. They must have experience in administrative functions including the use, interpretation and preparation of technical information, including record keeping and report writing. They must also be able to use windows based software and to manage a workload with supervision.

To demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Equalities and Diversity in both service delivery to the community, in relationships with colleagues and in employment practices.

The postholder must be able to work evenings/weekends on an occasional basis, own a current valid driving licence and have access to their own vehicle [or alternative vehicle arrangements] and have business use on their car insurance policy, to carry out the activities associated with the post.

The postholder must possess a flexible approach to work, including 'hot desking' and different working patterns.

Under supervision and guidance of qualified Building Control staff, to examine plans, calculations and other details of building work to ensure compliance with Building Regulations and to inspect sites and building works to establish compliance with deposited plans and Building Regulations.

Maintain detailed records.

Investigate complaints about possible contraventions of Building Regulations.

Assist the enforcement of the Building Regulation and other legislation relevant to service delivery.

Assist with the inspection and control of dangerous structures.

Inspect demolition work to ensure compliance with environmental notices

Liaise with bodies and agencies and organisations within and outside the Council.

Use Information Technology in undertaking service duties.

Contribute to and support service improvement projects and similar initiatives.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, customer care and be capable of effectively managing workloads; be educated to a minimum 4 GCSE level Grade A-C Grade which maths and English are included or equivalent and be prepared to undertake further training to achieve an NVQ in Building Surveying. It is desirable for the candidate to hold a valid driving licence and have daily use of a vehicle and have business use cover on their insurance policy.
