The overall purpose of Sheltered Housing is to provide the right accommodation and support when needed.
In Sheltered Housing we promote independent living for residents but with the knowledge that someone is always on hand to give support and to be available to help in an emergency. There are shared areas in some of the sheltered schemes in which residents can meet and enjoy social activities.
As a casual support assistant, you will work as part of the sheltered housing team, delivering support when needed to our residents in cat 1, 2 and 2.5 accommodation. You will be asked to cover staff absence and periods of high demand.
What is the role?
You will be working either within a Sheltered Housing Scheme, or calling on properties within a defined area of the city, as the need arises. You must be prepared to work in any part of the sheltered service as required.
As a Casual Support Assistant, you will provide residents with day to day housing related support according to need. This for example may involve calling on residents, domestic help and personal reassurance. You will arrange for property repairs and liaise with Care Agencies, Social Workers, GPs, chemists and families of residents where appropriate. You will be expected to deal with any emergencies. On occasions, this could involve assisting some frailer residents with personal care issues. A typical day will involve calling on residents to check on their welfare. You will spend time with residents to understand their support needs, documenting your learning on residents' records. You could be involved in the serving of meals to the residents, accompanying residents to appointments and assisting to run scheme activities. Some of these tasks will require you to handle and account for cash. Part of your duties will be to assist the Scheme Manager with ensuring the security of the building and the carrying out of various health and safety checks.
You will be under the supervision of a Sheltered Scheme Manager. There could be periods of time when you are lone working.
You will asked to cover shifts from Monday to Sunday including Bank Holidays, with the earliest shift commencing at 7am and the latest ending at 10pm. You will be expected to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service and to cover leave and other staff absence to ensure the delivery of the sheltered housing service.
