There is no tragedy which has touched the heart of local government in quite the same way as the Grenfell Tower fire. Helping people rebuild their lives after the tragedy, as well as rebuild their trust, remains our utmost priority.
In this newly established role you will act in a fully independent capacity in the adjudication of stage three complaints about Grenfell services. This will involve leading on investigations in response to complaints, analysing complex evidence, formulating an independent view and making recommendations, including proposing redress, where the complaint is upheld.
Whilst to this point the Grenfell directorate has received few formal complaints, it is anticipated that these will increase as policies begin to be more clearly defined. It is critical that against the backdrop of distrust that exists, these complaints are seen to be handled in a fair, timely and transparent way.
Many of the services provided to survivors of the Grenfell tragedy and others affected are non-statutory and cases are complex, cross-cutting and highly sensitive. As Independent Adjudicator, you will have a pivotal role in responding to the full range of complaints that progress to stage 3. These may include those relating to housing, payments, treatment and the ‘reasonableness’ of measures and solutions offered, but which are disputed.
This is both a challenging and rewarding role in equal measure. Whilst it is not for the faint hearted, we suspect that if you share our passion to make a difference in helping people rebuild their lives, you aren’t going to be daunted by its challenges.
We recognise our role is unique in local government. What we will be looking for is somebody with personal credibility, professional skill set and an understanding of housing to deal with the range of cases that exist. It is likely that this will have been developed through working as a Local Government or Housing Ombudsman or through dealing with relevant complex complaints at senior level e.g. Corporate Complaints Manager. Potentially, you could come from another legal or adjudication background if you are well versed in dealing with complex cases and have an understanding housing regulations and legislation.
Aside from the above, you will have the confidence to work autonomously and be able to quickly establish trust with residents and other stakeholders alike. You will also have a determined commitment to act with fairness, transparency and integrity at all times.
