About the role

The Council is making good tracks towards becoming self-financing in the near future. However, we recognise that we still have more work to do. This will mark a new relationship between ourselves and central government, making these challenging yet exciting times for us. As our new Head of Finance and Section 151 officer, you will be at the very heart of what is to come.

This is an influential role, in which you will report directly to the Chief Executive and will work closely with the Corporate Leadership Team and Heads of Service across the Council. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that robust financial strategies and plans are in place. This will help achieve required savings and provide long term financial stability for the Council.

On an operational level, you’ll be responsible for leading a professional team of c16 staff who will look to you for leadership and a clear sense of direction. As the Council becomes more commercially focused, you will develop the service further and ensure financial systems and processes provide the necessary rigour and responsiveness.

This is an interesting and diverse role encompassing a wide breadth of local government financial work, including HRA accounts, investment acquisitions and supporting major regeneration & development programmes. About you

The successful candidate must be a professionally qualified accountant with a strong technical background and experience at a senior level, ideally within a local government setting.

Key to your success will be your ability to work at both a strategic level – including developing the medium term financial plan and at an operational level in driving service improvement.

You will also have excellent communication skills – written and verbal and the ability to influence key stakeholders throughout the organisation and work effectively with appropriate external bodies.
