Hackney council is looking for someone to help us improve the customer experience and strengthen the overall trading environment in our markets. In recent years the council has worked hard to support its markets and has put some exciting plans in place for future development. The council currently operates six main markets located at Ridley Rd, Hoxton St, Broadway, Chatsworth Rd, Kingsland Rd and Well St. Each has its own unique characteristics playing an important role in their respective areas whilst bringing a distinct set of challenges and opportunities.
Reporting to the Markets team manager, the purpose of the Supervisor is to oversee the day to day operation of Hackney’s markets and street trading service, instructing and directing colleagues and contractors to deliver a professional operation and to ensure that traders comply with licence conditions. The Supervisor will support the Team Manager in organising the activities of the Inspector team and will work directly with traders on site to improve quality, safety, market appearance and specific market development projects. Saturdays are by far the busiest day of the week for Hackney’s markets, as a Supervisor you will be required to work every Saturday as part of your normal working week to meet customer demand and the needs of the Service.
The Supervisor leads on the growth of shop front trading licences along with checking that licence holders operate within the terms of their licence. Day to day the role involves acting as the first point of contact for traders, dealing with public enquiries, overseeing the set up and break down of markets, collecting fees, ensuring pitches meet with our standards and that waste and recycling are handled properly.
We are especially keen to seek candidates with strong team management experience and a track record of exceptional business performance. Ideally you will possess a good understanding of the relevant legislation and be used to putting monitoring systems in place within a service delivery function. You should have an excellent standard of written and verbal communication as much of your work will involve liaising directly with traders and the public. You will need a full clean driving licence and able to drive vehicles with a manual transmission.
