About the role

Havering is London’s third largest borough by area and earmarked as the City’s next big opportunity growth area. This is, without doubt, the most exciting place for an ambitious development professional to be.

With 30,000 new homes on their way and the impending introduction of Crossrail, our attractive borough is set to be the favoured destination of many new residents and businesses alike.

Successfully harnessing the opportunities this brings does not come without its challenges. Havering’s diverse mix of city living, a thriving economy and protected green belt and parks which cover more than half the borough are equally important, and will remain so.

In this pivotal place-shaping role you will be the driving force behind this exciting regeneration agenda. Taking on the challenge to expand the economy and at the same time protect the environment. Through retaining a clear focus, you will balance the needs of residents to achieve our commitment to improve overall wellbeing and prosperity. Sustainability sits at the heart of this balancing process. It is crucial that the borough remains attractive to both residents and businesses alike.

This is also an ideal time for you to join us. We have recently brought together planning and building control services, with economic development and regeneration under this newly created post. This now provides the opportunity to work in a more connective and collaborative way: encouraging synergy, innovation and improved outcomes.

You will have around 100 staff who will be looking to you for leadership and inspiration. Your focus will be on business development and investment, allowing us to realise our growth ambitions, purpose and strategic aims.

It will be fast-paced and challenging, but we suspect that if all the above appeals, you aren’t going to be daunted by that. We think you will want to join us on an exhilarating journey.

About you

When we look at your track record, we are less interested in your technical skills. What we will be looking for is your ability to drive success – doing the extraordinary and doing it well, having an empowering approach that gets the very best out of people, and personal credibility. Balancing risk, and a tenacity to deliver change with demonstrable outcomes, will be what defines your track record to date.

Your profile will allow you to lead with confidence in a fast-paced environment requiring astute business skills to oversee delivery of a diverse range of activities and developments that have complexity and challenge.

You will also be afforded the chance to lead in an organisation that is culturally alive to opportunity, values people and focuses on helping those that you lead capitalise on their strengths.

About us

As one of London’s largest boroughs, with excellent travel connections, award winning green spaces, a great riverside location and affordable housing, Havering is on track to becoming a perfect place to live and work in Greater London.

We have plenty of green open space complementing Romford and its suburban hubs including Hornchurch, Gidea Park and Rainham, boasting vibrant cultural and leisure opportunities and a thriving local economy.

Havering is a council with a bright future. It is ideally positioned to secure jobs, growth and prosperity for local people, with an ambitious and high-profile growth agenda.

As a council, we value our people and know that through rewarding them properly and investing in their development we can attract and retain the very best talent. We are a council that people want to work for and one in which you will have the opportunity to thrive and maximise your contribution and career potential.
