Applewood is a short breaks unit in Burgh Heath due to open in the Autumn 2009. We will provide day places and overnight stays for children with disabilities who live in Surrey. We will be open all year and can offer up to eight children and young people a service at any one time.
Surrey Children’s Service has a unique opportunity for Residential Workers to join an exciting new Residential Children’s home called Applewood. This home will support children and young people with physical and/or learning disabilities either in the daytime or overnight. In this challenging and satisfying role, you will work as part of a team that will provide a positive experience for the children and young people who come to Applewood.
As a Residential Worker in this new service, you will be part of a team responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for the children and young people who may come to stay there. Our ultimate goal will be to provide a positive experience for the children and young people whilst staying away from their homes. As part of a team, you will be responsible for building relationships with the children and young people and developing individual care plans for specific young people. Within the home there will be positive communication with colleagues and the young people, which will be essential and key to our success. There will be regular team meetings and you will be actively encouraged to contribute to strategies that will improve the everyday lives of the young people at Applewood.
The skills we are looking for and that you will need to demonstrate are good communication skills, ability to work as a team, preparedness to learn new skills.
Ideally you will have enthusiasm and commitment and a willingness to learn.
You should be able to demonstrate that you are ’child centred. You will also have good personal authority and an ability to develop and sustain appropriate professional and personal boundaries. The work will involve shift working across a 24 hour service, working weekends and bank holidays at times and you will need to be prepared to take the young people away on holidays. In return we offer unique opportunities for professional learning and development. This will be through regular supervision and training opportunities including the NVQ3 programme.
You must also be prepared to work unsociable hours, including public holidays.
An enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure, POCA and POVA check will be required for this role.
