This is a fixed term post to 31st March 2012. Refugees, described as such by the 1950 Refugee Convention, are people who have been legally granted status to remain in the UK and have proven beyond reasonable doubt that they would be in danger if they returned to their country of origin. This being the case, it is vital that once Refugee status has been granted, people are given dedicated and expert help during the first few weeks of residency to ensure they are able to arrange the basics of independent life such as housing, employment, education and health care. We are committed to working towards integration and cohesion, challenging isolation and breaking down barriers. The Asylum Service is looking to recruit an experienced community/housing/advice worker to provide this support and to ensure successful outcomes. This project is Supporting People funded and the successful candidate will work as part of a two person team under the direction of the Asylum Service manager. You will carry a case load of Refugees and accept referrals from within the service and from other sources. You will often work remotely and independently although there will be weekly supervision. You will be expected to evidence your work and produce regular and high quality progress reports. You will work closely with Berneslai Homes, The Asylum Team, DWP, CAB and other agencies. Please note for this position you will be required to undergo an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check. For an informal discussion please contact Jake Rollin in the Asylum Service on (01226) 787368. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
