The Borough Council of Newcastle-under-Lyme is situated in North Staffordshire on the border of Shropshire and Cheshire. It has a population of over 122,000 in a varied environment comprising urban and rural areas. It deals with over 900 planning applications a year.
Enforcement is part of the “frontline” of the planning service. As the enforcement officer you will deal directly with members of the public, investigating alleged breaches of planning regulations. You will be the first port of call for complainants, playing a key role in determining whether formal action needs to be taken. Reporting direct to the Deputy Development Control Manager, you will work closely with one of the senior planning officers and a support officer. You will manage your own time, be self-motivating and will be expected to show initiative as well as being well organised and methodical.
The post could suit a variety of different backgrounds. You may be a relatively new planner, keen to gain direct enforcement experience, or you could have significant amount of experience in other enforcement roles – health and safety, law enforcement, etc and wish to use this experience in a different field. Whatever your background, you will have a keen interest in the built environment.
You will be a good communicator and particular adept at dealing with situations where conflict could arise. You will be courteous and sensitive, but confident of your role and be willing to give clear guidance.
We offer the following benefits: Flexitime, Childcare Voucher Scheme, Payment of Professional Fees, Membership of the Local Government Scheme, Generous Annual Leave and Training Opportunities.
For an informal discussion please contact Guy Benson (Development Control Manager) or Elaine Moulton (Deputy Development Control Manager) on (01782) 742408.
