Delivering a Successful City-Suburb and Realising Barnet’s Three Strands Approach: Protect, Enhance, Grow

Barnet is the fastest growing Outer London Borough. We have set ourselves an ambitious new homes target of 20,000 by c.2016. In the context of the level of growth proposed over the next 15-20 years, and the need to protect and enhance existing quality suburbs, it is vital that the borough achieves high quality, sustainable and inclusive design in all new development and provides clear leadership on design matters.

Barnet also has 18 conservation areas and over 2000 listed buildings which require proactive protection as one of the borough’s most important assets. A major review of all Barnet’s Conservation Areas and preparation of up to date, detailed Character Appraisals and Management Plans is underway. Once completed these will provide a vital tool to support the management and protection of the key historic areas of the borough.

To ensure the delivery of high quality design and the protection of Barnet’s important historic areas a dedicated Design and Heritage Team has recently been created. We are now looking to recruit an enthusiastic, appropriately qualified and well organised officer to support the work of the team particularly on Conservation Area Appraisal work and the review of design guidance. The post is a Planner/Senior Planner post but we would anticipate appointing at the Planner grade initially.

For an informal discussion contact Lucy Shomali, Head of Strategy (Planning and Housing) on 020 8359 4749.

Closing date: 22 March 2010.
Interviews: w/c 29 March 2010.
