Divisional Director Development Services
The Divisional Director Development Services will deliver a world class planning and building control service and have a clear understanding of planning issues and the ability to deliver effective and timely planning services to local people. He/she will lead structural and cultural change within the service, making sure that the new department has the tools in place that facilitate high quality work.
Much of their focus will be on large scale projects that both generate value in their own right and have an effect on the rest of economy by increasing developer interest. Newham’s planning service is among the busiest in London with some of the most challenging projects underway many of which are being led by partner organisations. This role will involve a great deal of member contact and the successful candidate will be experienced at dealing with elected politicians and at building good working relationships. As and when required, he/she will deputise for the Executive Director on all aspects of the Regeneration, Planning and Property portfolio.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading planning in a complex urban environment, with the ability to manage some of London’s most exciting schemes. We are looking for someone to represent the department across the authority and sub region. He/she will be creative and look for new ways of working, whilst understanding the sensitive nature of our plans. He/she will have the credibility and communication skills to work successfully across the full spectrum of stakeholders, including central government, the private and public sectors and local residents.
A recognised degree level or equivalent qualification in, for example, planning and eligibility for membership of a relevant professional body, are essential in this role.
Above all, the appointee must understand the importance of this service to all customers, both major private sector business and local residents. They will deliver a world class service to all, making sure that residents are appropriately and properly engaged and treated to exceptional customer service in all their dealings with the planning and building control team.
As the Council has a normal retirement age of 65, the maximum age for recruiting new employees will usually be 64 1/2.
