NEWHAM’S GOT AMBITION – HAVE YOU?

Located in brand new state of the art riverside offices, Newham is an exciting, diverse and fast changing borough in the throes of an exciting phase of regeneration and renewal that we want Legal Services to be at the heart of. As the host borough for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games, it will become increasingly high profile over the coming years as new development revitalises the Borough even further. With your help, we can take our team forward and help the Council achieve and deliver excellence.

We are currently seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following vacant position within Legal Services:

Assistant Lawyer/Legal Officer – Housing Team

You will work within the Housing Team which deals with claims for possession of land, disrepair, homelessness, enforcement of tenancy conditions including seeking Injunctions and general advice on tenancy matters. The team plays a key role in realising the Council’s vision of making Newham a place where people choose to live and work. You will handle a varied caseload including some complex matters. You will have a sound knowledge of housing law and be able to advise on a range of housing matters. You will be required to undertake some advocacy work in the County Courts.

You should have proven civil litigation experience in the areas of housing work specified above. Demonstrable advocacy skills and the ability to carry a varied caseload are essential.

If you wish to have an informal discussion please contact Momtaz Begum on 0203 373 9290 or e-mail

Newham Legal Services is IIP and LEXCEL accredited and the Council is
rated a 3-Star good authority under the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) with the ambition to go even further.

As the Council has a normal retirement age of 65, the maximum age for recruiting new employees will usually be 64 1/2.

The Council reserves the right to close adverts early if there is a large response.

Equal Opportunities

The London Borough of Newham recognises that everyone in Newham has the right to play a full part in the life of the borough. This means that everyone should have equal access to council services, job opportunities and to having their voices heard.

It is the council’s position that everyone should be treated fairly, without discrimination and with respect of their human rights, regardless of their gender, race, age, disability, sexual orientation, HIV status, religion, national or social origin or class.
