About the role
Many places claim to be unique or special. The City of Brighton and Hove is amongst the few that can genuinely lay claim to both.
A vibrant visitor destination, famous for its cosmopolitan lifestyle, Brighton & Hove is an economic growth centre with a global reputation.

We are also famed for our world class arts, culture and heritage. We are a city that is really going places.
This role provides a serious opportunity for you to make your mark and hone your leadership and transformational skills at a national and internal level.
In this high profile role, you will shape and spearhead our 2030 vision for the City and Greater Brighton City Region Economic Strategy that positions Brighton & Hove to compete both nationally and internationally. You will complete our Devolution negotiations with Whitehall to secure a deal for economic growth, continue to deliver the City’s £2billion and City Region’s £1.6billion Investment Programmes. As well as lead on other key projects such as the Brighton Waterfront, Circus Street, and establishing a joint venture to develop 1000 living wage homes.
With a more Internal focus, you will complete the Planning Service transformation so that recent performance improvements are sustained, and our City Plan Part 2 is adopted, improving our customers’ experience through digital transformation, and embedding a culture amongst Planning service staff that gives confidence to investors in Brighton & Hove.
As our successful candidate, you will share our ambition and vision for the City, with the ability, drive and energy to lead partners to shape the future of the City and deliver it.
You will have a broad range of relevant experience, combining commercial and technical skills, together with adept political, relationship and leadership skills to deliver high quality services, collaboration and transformation.
Furthermore, you will come with a demonstrable record of success of delivering major investment programmes, structuring commercial deals, developing new delivery models and bidding for Local Growth Funds.
Our city is enviably located between the sea and the South Downs National Park. It is known for its easy-going approach to life, quirky shopping, restaurants, festivals and beautiful architecture. Many people choose to come and live in the city for the opportunities it offers and a great quality of life that successfully combines a choice of city living, beautiful countryside locations and a range of coastal towns and villages.
Our city also benefits from emerging opportunities in environmental industries, proximity to London, Gatwick Airport, two Channel ports within the city region and good infrastructure links northwards.
In this role, you will not only benefit from all the T&C’s associated with working for a first rate council, but you will join a forward thinking, collaborative and mutually supportive management team. You will also enjoy a good degree of autonomy and positive officer/member relationships.
