Arts and Culture Programme Director

Brighton and Hove Council

Salary up to £77k plus relocation package of up to £10k Full time – Permanent

About the role

Brighton & Hove has a proud history in arts, culture and heritage.

Much of our success as an economic growth centre and popular tourist destination is down to our creative, artistic and cultural sectors, providing a vibrancy for those living, working, studying and setting-up businesses here.

This exceptional, place-making role provides an exciting opportunity to build on our proud heritage and shape our ambition for a world-class arts, culture and heritage offer in Brighton & Hove for the next 10 years.

Your responsibilities will include driving forward high-profile programmes and developing the City’s cultural offer, embedding arts, culture and heritage at the heart of our regeneration, economic growth and well-being ambitions. You will also galvanise joint working across the region, as well as influencing government and funding agencies to ensure our cultural scene is inclusive, sustainable and has the widest impact.

You will spearhead the transfer of our Royal Pavilion and Museums’ sites to a new charitable trust, leading on negotiations with relevant stakeholders and trade unions, as well as engaging with and supporting staff through this change.

About you

Key to your success will be your experience, insight and foresight in the Arts and Culture sector and in delivering programmes of activity, including attracting funding from relevant agencies.

You will have a demonstrable track record of success in transformation and change management, including leading people through change and, ideally, of different delivery models e.g. charitable trusts.

In addition, you will be passionate about partnership-working and understand how Arts and Culture can contribute to the wider health and well-being of the City.

About us

Our city is enviably located between the sea and the South Downs National Park. It is known for its easy-going approach to life, quirky shopping, restaurants, festivals and beautiful architecture. Many people choose to come and live here for the opportunities on offer and the great quality of life that successfully combines a choice of city living, beautiful countryside locations and a range of coastal towns and villages.

Brighton & Hove’s arts, cultural and heritage offer is one of the great attractions of living and working in the city. The history of the City is rich in examples of forward-thinking place-making and cultural regeneration, from the building the Royal Pavilion in the nineteenth century, to the establishment of Brighton Festival as the largest arts festival in England.

In this role, you will not only benefit from all the T&C’s associated with working for a first-rate council, but you will join a forward-thinking, collaborative and mutually-supportive management team. You will also enjoy a good degree of autonomy and positive officer/member relationships.
